There are a number of options for purchasing and using a mobile phone in Australia. If you already have a mobile phone, you may be able to purchase a SIM card (check if your phone is compatible) and choose either Pre-Paid credit, a call cap or an account for your calls and text. Alternatively you can purchase a phone in combination with a SIM package.
